This thesis deals with the functioning and mechanisms within emissions trading schemes with a special focus on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Within the CDM, the various deviant forms of behavior are examined in more detail on the basis of various case studies and analyzed and interpreted with the help of the criminological concepts of rational-choice theory, control-balance theory and commitment theory. It becomes apparent that explaining the deviant forms of behavior within emissions trading requires a deep consideration of all circumstances and that already existing insights from economic deviance are not directly transferable. The failures of emissions trading identified here need to be addressed for the future in order to maintain emissions trading as an efficient and appropriate tool in the fight against climate change.
