This article examines which factors in the relationship between companies and the state play an essential role in environmental degradation and climate change. For a case-based presentation, one of the largest agricultural companies is used to illustrate the uncontrolled and non-transparent actions of similar parties. To investigate the deviating behaviour in this context, the criminological concepts of state-corporate crime, deviant lobbying and norm genesis are used as interpretive tools. As it turns out, mutualistic structures enable and drive environmental crime. Using the criminological concepts, however, it becomes possible to depict the spiral mechanism of this relationship and understand the relevance of transparency in political discourse as well as increased regulation of said environmental crime.
