Conflicts in Mexico, which are fought by organised criminal groups among themselves or with state forces, are often characterised by a high level of violence, with weapons from German manufacturers such as Heckler & Koch also being used. In this paper, we have compiled existing criminological concepts to describe an interaction between the actors in these conflicts. The aim is a better understanding of the situation in Mexico as well as to test the validity of those concepts when applied to a complex case study, the student massacre in Iguala in 2014. Ultimately, the theories used were found to contribute to the explanation of the interplay between actors of violence in Mexico. However, the theory needs further refinement, especially with regard to the role of organised criminal groups.
